In 1980, a friend asked Kathleen Kelly, who had herself immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1958, to help the needy war-torn children in Northern Ireland. She was directed to a Project Children, based in New York City. The program brings children from the most desperate sections of Northern Ireland to Central New York for four weeks each summer. Kathleen has believed this to be her mission, and the Syracuse Chapter of Project Children was born. Each year, the Franciscan Sisters host a picnic for the children—which are the perfect melding of Kathleen’s two favorite groups—senior citizens and children!

Now that there has been “peace” declared in Ireland, the interest in Project Children has waned somewhat. Unfortunately, although there is a “declared peace” there are still many, many problems unresolved among the Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. The need for Project Children remains strong. Some of the original “Project Children” are now sending their children to the United States with Project Children in the hopes that someday there will be true harmony among the people of Northern Ireland.

Kathleen Kelly estimates that over 6,500 children have come to Syracuse and she has an ever-increasing desire to expand that number.

Project Children would like to say a big “Thank You” to all of the people who make our mission a huge success.

  • To Our Host Families for opening their homes and their hearts to make a difference in the lives of the children from Northern Ireland.
  • To Our Fundraisers for tirelessly working to raise money to keep our mission alive for the past 29 years.
  • To Our Supporters for giving so freely of their time and energies. Your contributions, large or small, are greatly appreciated.
  • To Our CNY Community for always welcoming the children from Northern Ireland into our beautiful community.

Because of the commitment and dedication of these people, our community hosted more children this past summer than any other area across the nation!!! Thank you for all you do for the children of Northern Ireland. God Bless.
